Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The Periyar wildlife sanctuary situated in Thekkady among the Western Ghats is an ideal example of nature’s rich bio-diversity and picturesque beauty. The Periyar wildlife sanctuary and park is considered as one of the most protected reserves for tigers and other wild animals. It is home to an artificial lake built during the British reign and to animals like tiger, elephants, boars and Langur. If you visit the area, you will notice that the place is a screaming tourist destination comprising of both local and foreign tourists. You can have a great time in the wilderness by trekking across tribal villages and hiking the mountain to reach the sanctuary. Kumily situated at Thekkady is the closest town where you can avail for a bread and breakfast service, resorts, spice and chocolate shops and souvenir shops. The amazingly tall-grown trees are so high that you will have to fully crane your neck to catch the top of the trees. The Periyar wildlife sanctuary is home to intensely dense evergreen forests and picturesque lake. The Periyar Lake which was artificially formed is known for elephants that can be viewed near the banks and the thickly formed forest around it. The banks of the lake contain grasslands which provide for a good place to have a picnic spread with you. The widespread area of the forest houses many rare and exotic variety of endemic flora and fauna.

Wildlife in Periyar

Other than elephants and tigers, other animals include spotted Deer, Sambar, Mouse Deer, Wild Pigs, Barking Deer, Wild Dog and Gaur. The four varieties of primates found in the reserve park are the Gee’s Golden Langur, Lion-tailed Macaque, Bonnet Macaque, Langur and the Nilgiri Langur. The Nilgiri Tahr, an extremely rare species has made the Periyar forest reserve as its home. There are now a count of 40 tigers in the Periyar Forest Reserve. This reserve has become the breeding ground for some of the endangered species of animals around India.

Flora – Periyar National Park.

The Periyar National Park has a vibrant variety of flora. The natural vegetation in the Periyar National Park is diversified into two types, the semi-evergreen forests and the tropical evergreen forests. The central part of the Park houses grasslands and deciduous forest trees. The forest was declared as a Tiger reserve in 1978 and houses a wide vegetation that offers excellent nourishment and cover for the animals in the form of soft grass and juicy shoots. There are over 1,900 species of plants that blossoms belonging to 159 families that were recognized by the Kerala forest experts. Major tree varieties in the forest include Rosewood, Teak, Eucalyptus, Bamboo, Tamarind, Gulmohar, Banyan, Pipal, Sandalwood, Mango, Jamun and Jacaranda. The major classification of the flora in the Park are of thick evergreen forests, savannah grasslands and wet deciduous forest regions.
