Better known for Nilgiri Tahr - an endangered species of wild goat, Eravikulam National Park is Kerala’s first national park. Besides Nilgiri Tahr, this park is incredibly the natural abode of the variant of wild species like sambar deer, Nilgiri marten, Nilgiri langur, Indian porcupine, jungle cat, wild dog, leopard, tiger, golden jackal, ruddy mongoose, dusky palm squirrel, and small-clawed otter. You can even spot elephants during certain seasons. Other than animals, Eravikulam National Park is a home to more than 132 bird species and 101 species of butterflies. The hilly plateaus, green grasslands, perennial streams and mountain peaks add extra beauty to this park. The valleys covered with a purple-blue carpet of Neelakurinji flowers that blooms once in every twelve years is a visually delightful sight.
